Sacred Name
Sacred Name is a term used by some Bible students to designate the Hebrew name of the Creator by which He identified Himself to Moses at the burning bush. Those who hold the Sacred Name doctrine do not use the common English words "God" or "Lord" when speaking of Him, but rather use what they believe to be the correct pronunciation of His name given in the original Hebrew manuscripts of the Old Testament. In the manuscripts, only the letters for the four consonant sounds are used to indicate this name. Scholars disagree what vowel sounds were inserted between these letters. And there is also disagreement on the pronunciation of one of the letters-is it a "W" sound or a "V" sound? Thus there is considerable disagreement among Sacred Name groups on just what pronunciation of the Name is the correct one. The most common choice is "Yahweh," but variants include "Yahveh," Yahowah," "Yehovah," "YodHayVovHay," and more. |
