Hymn writer (lyrics): H. G. Spafford
Music composer: P. P. Bliss
Notes: Following the tragic loss of his daughters due to a shipping accident, Horatio wrote this hymn while traveling to see his wife after she survived the sinking. Some survivors of the Titanic disaster are reported to have sung a Philip Bliss hymn entitled Pull for the Shore while they rowed away from the ship.
Musical Instruments in the word of God
Jubal is the first person in the Bible related to the creation of music (the ancestor of all musicians who play the harp and the flute - Genesis 4:21). A variety of instruments existed at the time of Daniel the prophet (Daniel 3:4 - 5). Trumpets were used to call the people to assemble (Numbers 10:1 - 2). Additionally, instruments were (and still are) an integral part of the worship of God. When the Ark of the Covenant was on its way to Jerusalem, King David and other Israelites played music in celebration of its journey.
4. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab at Gibeah, going with the ark of God. And Ahio went before the ark. 5. And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all instruments of fir wood, with lyres and with harps, and with drums, and with sistrums, and with cymbals. (2Samuel 6: 4 - 5, HBFV)
Moses' sister used a tambourine-like instrument to praise God (Exodus 15:20). Instruments were used by those with drinking problems to celebrate (Isaiah 5:11 - 12).
Music in Jerusalem's temple began with King David. David was not only a poet but also a musical composer who wrote no less than eighty of the 150 Psalms found in the Bible. He also invented several instruments.
1. And David was old and full of days, and he made his son Solomon king over Israel. 2. And he gathered together all the rulers of Israel with the priests and the Levites . . . 5. And four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which David made for praising. (1Chronicles 23:1 - 2, 5, see also Amos 6:5, Psalm 33:2; 144:9).
There are no less than fifteen musical instruments mentioned in the word of God.
