Christian Terms Definitions

Cult
Until recent history this term had no particularly negative connotation. The word "cult" was commonly used to refer to any past system of religious worship or ritual related to a particular god (for example, the "cult of Diana of the Ephesians.").
Within the past few decades the term cult has taken on more negative connotations. Some use it to refer to a small religious group they believe are dangerous to themselves or others, such as those who use deceptive or abusive methods to attract and keep followers. Some religious people use the term cult to indicate a group that has beliefs contrary to what the majority of a particular religion (for example, Christianity or Judaism) hold to be true.
