Can a name written in God's
Book of Life be taken back OUT?

Q.Can a name written into God's Book of Life (Revelation 3:5) be deleted or blotted out?

A. According to the scriptures, a true Christian can have their name blotted out from the Book of Life and lose their salvation if they fail to overcome and endure to the end of their life.

Let us first begin by looking closely at the scripture you referenced.

"He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels." (Revelation 3:5, KJV throughout)

Notice at the beginning of this verse it states that “he that overcomes” will not have their name blotted out of the book of life. A true Christian must overcome the world, Satan, and their own human nature, and serve Almighty God to the end of their lives to keep their name in the book of life. Let’s look at some scriptures that show that a Christian can lose their salvation and therefore, have their name removed from the book of life.

Christians are offered a crown of eternal life if they hold fast and maintain their relationship with God:

"Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown." (Revelation 3:11)

"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." (James 1:12)

"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." (2Timothy 4:8)

"And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." (1Peter 5:4)

Christians have an obligation to maintain their relationship with God and not neglect their salvation walk:

"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;" (Hebrews 2:1-3)

"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." (Phillipians 2:12)

If a Christian sins willfully, their salvation can be lost:

"For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

"Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

"For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." (Hebrews 10:26-31)

"For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

"But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." (2Peter 2:20-22).

David showed that we humans are able to continue to repent of our sins throughout our lifetimes and maintain a proper relationship with God so that our names are maintained in the book of life. God never gives up on us:

"Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

"Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

"Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit." (Psalm 51:1-12)

Jesus said that a true Christian must endure onto the end:

"And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved." (Matthew 10:22)

"But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." (Matthew 24:13)
