| | Lot and his daughtersSubmit YOUR questions, through our easy to use form, to our team of mature Christians known as the Email Evangelists! Question: Why did Lot and his daughters get drunk and have sex? Answer: Although Lot did, according to the Bible, have sex with his daughters, he is still considered righteous by God: "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned . . . and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes . . . and delivered RIGHTEOUS LOT, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked . . ." (2Peter 2:4, 5-9, NKJV)
The Bible verses that discuss Lot and his daughters are found in the book of Genesis: "The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. "But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. "And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities . . . "Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. "Now the firstborn said to the younger, 'Our father is old, AND THERE IS NO MAN ON THE EARTH to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.'

"It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, 'Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.' Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, AND HE DID NOT KNOW WHEN SHE LAY DOWN OR WHEN SHE AROSE. "Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. " (Genesis 19:23-25, 30-36, NKJV)
| | Lot and Daughters Orazio Gentileschi | | | Consider the awesome and powerful events that his family experienced in a relatively short time. They witnessed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah TOTALLY destroyed by fire and brimstone rained down from heaven by God. Then, not only is the wife of Lot turned into a pillar of salt because of her disobedience, his family out of fear has to live in a cave. Would any of us not feel a bit distressed and afraid of what might happen next? The daughters must have thought it was the end of civilization and that they were some (if not the only!) people living on the face of the earth. They were obviously greatly concerned about the future of their family (and possibly the human race). This concern led them to do what they did. The daughters of Lot, wanting to continue the family, got their father so filled with food and wine that he became unaware (maybe in part due to his time spent in Sodom) that he was having sex with family members. Their intent of preserving their family name was a noble one, but they certainly went about it in the wrong way. Each of them soon gave birth to a baby boy. One was Moab (father of the Moabites) and the other Benammi (father of the Ammonites). Thank you for your question regarding Lot and his daughters. | | Written by: Rick / Eileen Beltz |
