Q. What is the "Jireh" referred to by Abraham when he was going to sacrifice Issac?
(Submitted by: Calley)
A. Abraham obeyed God in offering his son as a sacrifice. Just as he was about to slit Isaac's throat an angel called from heaven:
""Lay not your hand upon the lad, neither do any thing to him, for now I know that you fear God seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me." And Abraham looked, and a ram was caught in a thicket by its horns, and Abraham offered the ram for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place Jehovah-jireh, as it is said, "In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen."" ( Genesis 22: 12-14)
This is the only reference to jireh in the King James Version. Dr James Strong identifies Jehovah-jireh as meaning 'Jehovah will see (to it).' Jireh, therefore, means "will see (to it)," Some translators say jireh means "will provide," as God provided a ram in place of Isaac.
Jehovah-jireh is a symbolic name for Mount Moriah, traditional site of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
