Q. What is the JIREH referred to by Abraham as he was going to SACRIFICE his only son Issac? A. Abraham obeyed God in offering his son as a sacrifice. Just as he was about to slit Isaac's throat an angel called from heaven: "And he (the angel of the Lord from heaven) said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son] from me. "And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind [him] a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said [to] this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen." (Genesis 22:12-15, KJV)
This is the only reference to jireh in the King James Version Bible. Dr James Strong identifies Jehovah-jireh as meaning 'Jehovah will see (to it).' Jireh, therefore, means "will see (to it)," Some translators say jireh means "will provide," as God provided a ram in place of Isaac. Jehovah-jireh is a symbolic name for Mount Moriah, traditional site of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. |
