Sheba, who sought to lead a rebellion against King David, fled to Abelbethmaachah. A wise woman convinced the city to behead Sheba in order to spare its destruction.

Syrian King Benhadad, responding to King Asa of Judah's request for help, conquers the city. Abelbethmaachah is also one of the places attacked by Assyria's King Tiglathpileser.
