Judas, after his betrayal of Jesus, rejected the thirty pieces of silver paid to him for the act (Matthew 27:3 - 8). He then committed suicide in a nearby field. The Jewish religious leaders used the money he returned to purchase the field he died in and use it as a place to bury strangers.
