The Lord allows this, for eight years, because the Israelites had forsaken him and began worshipping other Gods. After they cry out for help he sends Othniel to deliver them.

Othniel, with God's help, defeats the Mesopotamian king. He serves as Israel's Judge for forty years (1350 to 1310 B.C.).
