Gideon (Gedeon)
Feller (warrior), hewer, the cutter down

Gideon is spelled Gedeon in the KJV New Testament (Hebrews 11:32). He is also referred to as Jerubbaal. The name was given him by his father when Gideon destroyed an altar to the pagan God Baal (Judges 6:32).

Gideon is used by God to free his people from Midianite oppression. He becomes one of Israel's Judges (1145 to 1105 B.C.) after he and his army of 300 fighters crush the Midianites in battle.

Eleven of Israel's tribes take action against the tribe of Benjamin for their refusal to release vile rapists and murderers for punishment. They form an army of 400,000 men and kill 2,000 fighters in Gidom. When the bloodshed finally ended all but 600 Benjamite men were killed.
