Errors in the Bible

The Old Testament, faithfully copied by priests and Levites in the Masoretic Text, has relatively few translation problems. Several errors exist in the King James Version Bible, however, because the translators adopted Latin readings for some verses not found in the original Greek manuscripts. Additionally, the translators of the KJV, all of which came from the Church of England, occasionally translated text to conform to the already established beliefs and structure of the church. Other reasons exist for the corruption of certain text.

It should be noted that while this article lists some errors in the King James Bible and their more accurate translation, the mistakes in such modern translations such as the New International Version, Good News, English Standard Version and others are more numerous and worse!

Where noted, corrections are from the Holy Bible in Its Original Order - A Faithful Version, Second Edition (HBFV).

General KJV Errors

Genesis 1:2

KJV: "And the earth was without form, and void; . . . "

Correction: "And the earth became without form, and void; . . . "

Comments: The word translated as "was" is hayah (Strong's Concordance #H1961), which is more accurately translated as 'became" (see Genesis 19:26).

Genesis 10:9

KJV Bible: "He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD."

Correction: "He was a mighty hunter against the LORD. Therefore it is said, 'Like Nimrod - the mighty hunter against the LORD.'" (HBFV)

Comments: Nimrod was not in front of God, nor representing him, but placed himself in opposition to the Creator.

Leviticus 16:8, 10, 26

KJV: "And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. . . . But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness. . . . And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp."

Correction: "And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel. . . . But the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement upon it and sent away into the wilderness for Azazel . . . And he that let go the goat for Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp." (HBFV)

Comments: Today, the word scapegoat means someone UNJUSTLY blamed for the sins of others. The original word Azazel is meant to represent Satan, who is no scapegoat. He is guilty of his part in our sins.

2Kings 2:23

KJV Bible: "And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head."

Correction: "And he went up from there to Bethel. And while he was going up on the highway, a gang of youths came out from the city and mocked him, and said to him, 'Go up, bald head! Go up, bald head!' " (HBFV)

Ezekiel 20:25

KJV Bible: "Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live; "

Correction: "Wherefore I also gave them over to their OWN statutes that were not good, and their own ordinances which they could not live." (HBFV)

Comments: God's laws are good, perfect, and right. This verse shows that since Israel rejected God's laws, He allowed them to do as they wished.

Malachi 4:6

KJV Bible: "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

Correction: "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the sons, and the heart of the sons to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with utter destruction." (HBFV)

Matthew 27:49

KJV Bible: "The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him."

Correction: "But the rest said, 'Let Him alone! Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.' Then another took a spear and thrust it into His side, and out came water and blood." (HBFV)

Comments: Matthew 27:49 omits text that was in the original. Jesus' death came when a soldier pierced His side (see Revelation 1:7).

Luke 2:14

KJV: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. "

Correction: "Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth among men of goodwill." (HBFV)

Comments: There will be peace on earth among men who have God's will in their hearts.

Acts 12:4

KJV: "And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people."

Correction: "And after arresting him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four sets of four soldiers to guard him with the intent of bringing him out to the people after the Passover season." (HBFV)

Comments: The Greek word pascha (Strong's Concordance #G3957) in this verse is inaccurately translated Easter. This word should be translated as Passover, which agrees with the translation of pascha as Passover as found in Matthew 26:2 and other verses.

1Corinthians 1:18

KJV: "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

Correction: "For to those who are perishing, the preaching of the cross is foolishness; but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God." (HBFV)

Comments: Salvation is not a destination completely reached in this life. Believers must endure and remain faithful to God to the end.

1Corinthians 15:29

KJV Bible: "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?"

Correction: "Otherwise, what shall they do who have been baptized for the resurrection of the dead, if the dead are not raised at all? Why then are they baptized for the resurrection of the dead?" (HBFV)

2Corinthians 6:2

KJV Bible: "(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) "

Correction: "(For He says, “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is an acceptable time. Behold, now is a day of salvation.)"

Comments: This verse is a quote from Isaiah 49:8 that writes about a day, NOT the day, of salvation. The day of salvation is not the same for each individual. The firstfruits have their day of salvation during this life. The rest of humanity will have a full chance at salvation in the second resurrection.

2Thessalonians 2:10

KJV: "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. "

Correction: "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in those who are perishing because they did not receive the love of the truth, so that they might be saved." (HBFV)

1Timothy 6:10

KJV Bible: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Correction: "For the love of money is a root of all evils; by which some, while striving after riches, were seduced from the faith, and have impaled themselves with many sorrows." (HBFV)

Hebrews 4:8-9

KJV: "For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. "

Correction: "For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken long afterwards of another day. There remains, therefore, Sabbathkeeping for the people of God." (HBFV)

Revelation 14:4

KJV: "These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb."

Correction: "These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins; they are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They were purchased from among men as first fruits to God and to the Lamb;" (HBFV)

Revelation 20:10

KJV Bible: "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

Correction: "And the Devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet had been cast; and they, Satan and the demons, shall be tormented day and night into the ages of eternity."

KJV Punctuation mistakes

Mark 16:9

KJV: "Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils."

Correction: "Now after Jesus had risen, early the first day of the weeks He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons."

Comments: There is a missing implied comma between "risen" and "early." Jesus did not rise from the dead on a Sunday morning. Jesus died on a Wednesday and his resurrection occurred on a Saturday evening.

Luke 23:43

KJV: "And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

Correction: "And Jesus said to him, 'Truly, I tell you today, you shall be with Me in paradise.'" (HBFV)

Comments: This verse is erroneous 'proof' that Jesus went straight to heaven at His death. The original Greek did not have punctuation marks as we do today. The clarifying comma should come after the word "today." The believing malefactor would be with Christ in the paradise of the redeemed after his resurrection in the far future.
