Meaning of Numbers: The Number 34

The English phrases "thirty and four" and "four and thirty," used for the number 34, are recorded 2 times in 2 King James Bible verses. The phrases are found once in the books of Genesis and 1Chronicles.

One possible meaning of the number 34 may be related to the naming of a son. The 34th time Abraham's name is recorded in Scripture is when he named his first and only son, through Sarah, Isaac.

And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac (Genesis 21:3).

Of the top ten largest books in the entirety of Scripture, eighth ranked Deuteronomy has 34 chapters, 959 verses and 28,461 words (KJV Bible). The longest book is Psalms with 150 chapters.

Appearances of Number Thirty-Four

The Hebrew word beersheba, Strong's #H884, is recorded 34 times in 33 Hebrew Old Testament verses. It is found the most in Genesis (11 times) followed by 2Samuel (5). The word, which means "well of an oath" or "well of sevenfold oath," was left untranslated in the King James as the name "Beersheba."

The village of Beersheba received its name from Abraham after he had Abimelech the Philistine agree to protect his water rights in the area (Genesis 21:25 - 32). During most of Israel's history the phrase "Dan to Beersheba" was commonly used to designate the northern and southern limits of the nation.

Wherefore he (Abraham) called that place Beersheba; because there they (him and Abimelech) sware both of them (Genesis 21:31, KJV).

And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the Lord (1Samuel 3:20, KJV).

The Bible specifically references four Passovers (Luke 2:41, John 2:13, 6:4, Matthew 26), plus another that is strongly hinted at (Luke 6:1), during the earthly life of Jesus Christ. Since his birth in the fall of 5 B.C. to his death in the spring of 30 A.D., the Lord lived through 34 Passovers.

Matthew's genealogy of Jesus through his stepfather Joseph names King Solomon as the thirty-fourth person in his legal genealogy (Matthew 1:6). Luke's bloodline genealogy of Christ, however, through Mary, names David's son Nathan as the thirty-fourth person (Luke 3:31).

The patriarch Eber's first son, Peleg, is born when he is 34 years old (Genesis 11:16). It is likely, during Peleg's lifetime, that land bridges between the major continents were covered by melting ice water trapped during Noah's flood.

And Eber begat two sons. The name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan (Genesis 10:25, HBFV).

Such great volumes of water would make travel to different parts of the globe, via land, impossible.

Number 34 and Myths

Isaiah 34 is unique in that it mentions two mythical beasts and a mythical person in only two of its verses.

And the unicorns shall come down with them . . .

The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there . . . (Verses 7 and 14 of Isaiah 34, KJV).

Verse 7 mentions unicorns, which are strong, fierce and untamable mythical beasts possessing a single horn coming out of their head. Satyrs, found in verse 14, are half-human and half animal. They have a head and torso of a man but the legs and feet of a goat.

The Hebrew word from which we get "the screech owl," a phrase also in verse 14 of Isaiah 34, is liyliyth. Lilith, based on this word, is the name given in Jewish demonology for a mysterious female night spirit considered the mother of all demons.

The Fibonacci Sequence

The number 34 is the tenth number in a unique series known as the Fibonacci sequence.

Fibonacci numbers are named after Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (who was later known as Fibonacci). His sequence was introduced to Western Europe in 1202 A.D.

A Fibonacci sequence is a set where each of them is the sum of the previous two in the list. The sequence begins with 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, etc.

This sequence which includes 34, used in some computer algorithms, also appears in God's creation. It has been observed that the arrangement of leaves on certain stems, the distribution of fruit sprouts of a pineapple, and so on follows a Fibonacci pattern.

The Hebrew word leah, Strong's Concordance #H3812, is recorded 34 times in 32 Hebrew Old Testament verses. It is found in the books of Genesis (33 times) and Ruth (1). The word, which means "weary," is untranslated in the King James as the name "Leah."

Leah was the eldest daughter of Laban. Although Jacob wanted to marry Rachel, the youngest daughter, Laban deceived him into taking Leah as his first wife (Genesis 29). God blessed Leah, however, because she was not as loved as Rachel, with producing seven of Jacob's twelve sons.

And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favored (Genesis 29:16 - 17, KJV).

And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me (Genesis 29:32, KJV).

Leah is one of the most referenced females in Scripture.

There are 36 words and phrases in the Bible's original languages that are recorded exactly 34 times.

34 is the product of 2 x 17, both of which are prime numbers.

In the Old Testament, the Biblical chapters of Genesis 21, 25, 43, 44, 46, Leviticus 16, 27, Numbers 2, 35, Joshua 22, 1Kings 4, 15, 16, 1Chronicles 27, 2Chronicles 18, Job 21, 41, Proverbs 24, Isaiah 10, Jeremiah 7 and 52 contain 34 verses in the King James Bible.

In the New Testament, the chapters Matthew 6, 8, 20, Acts 17 and 1Corinthians 11 have 34 verses in the KJV.

Paul, around the spring of 33 A.D., becomes converted after God miraculously appears to him on his way to Damascus (Acts 9:3 - 18). It does not take him long, however, to begin powerfully testifying in the local synagogues that Jesus is the promised Messiah.

The Jews, who hate Paul's message, begin to plot his death. The apostle narrowly escapes the city and travels to the barren landscape of Arabia to be taught personally by Jesus Christ for three years. 34 A.D. marks his first full year in the wilderness. The apostle mentions this period of intense training and spiritual maturity in the book of Galatians.

Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Peter, and I remained with him fifteen days (Galatians 1:17 - 18, HBFV).
