Perfect by Fiat
When God created angels he gave one named Lucifer, which means "son of the morning," a set of unique attributes, skills and powers.
Lucifer was blessed with unmatched wisdom along with the ability to masterfully create music. He was also clothed with unparalleled beauty through gemstones and precious metals.
God created Lucifer as the most perfect being without sin he could by fiat. When he described Lucifer's creation in Ezekiel 28 he mentioned the angel's perfect characteristics FOUR times!
"You seal up the measure of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty . . .
". . . every precious stone was your covering, the ruby, the topaz, and the diamond . . . The workmanship of your settings (Hebrew toph, a percussion instrument) and of your sockets (Hebrew neqeb meaning holes in a pipe) was prepared in you in the day that you were created . . .
"You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created . . ." (Ezekiel 28:12 - 13, 15, HBFV throughout).
The Perfect Job
After Lucifer's creation he was given the powerful and unique position of a covering cherub stationed at God's throne (Ezekiel 28:14)! He then carried out his tasks with such dedication and zeal that he became the first (and only known) angel rewarded with a throne of responsibility (Isaiah 14:13). He was then charged with overseeing one third of all the angels and sent to earth.
Corruption
Lucifer, now working away from God's throne and his direct oversight, began to change the way he viewed himself. He began to believe his looks, as well as his other traits, not only made him superior to all other angels but to God himself! This led to him filling his heart with vanity (sometimes called pride in the Bible) and sinning.
Lucifer's arrogance knew no bounds. Like creeping rust on metal, his vanity ate away at the true wisdom he was given. He quickly came to believe in the perfection of his own thoughts and views.
Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness (Ezekiel 28:17).
Vanity Justifies Lust
The first sin committed in the universe was vanity, created when Lucifer believed the greatest being in existence was himself!
This vanity in the first sinning angel "naturally" led to the conclusion that he rightfully deserved far more authority and glory than he had. The universe, he felt, would be better ruled by himself whose "perfection" earned him the right to be worshipped.
Lucifer's out of control vanity led to lusting after (demanding) things he did not possess. His sins of vanity and lust soon led to corrupting one third of all angels under his supervision. It was then time to gather his army of angels, in his own spiritual image, to storm heaven and overthrow God (Isaiah 14:13 - 14)!
Something to Consider
The sins of vanity and lust ultimately produced in Lucifer the mind of an evil genius whose greatness completely blinds them to reality. Here's something to think about. Why did the devil, convinced he was vastly superior to anyone else, need to wrangle and gather an army of "inferior" spirits to attack heaven?
Conclusion
Lucifer's twin sins of vanity and lust caused the first spiritual death in what was a truly perfect universe (see Genesis 1). Not content with being the only angel who received a throne from God, he willingly turned himself into a spiritual black hole which exists only to conquer and destroy.
