Top Ten Pagan Deities

Who were the ten pagan deities whose worship had the biggest impact on Biblical history and ancient Israel in particular? In alphabetical order, the first one is Ashtoreth (Ashtaroth), goddess of the Zidonians, a false deity both Israel (1Samuel 7:3 - 4) and Solomon foolishly worshipped (1Kings 11:5). The next is Baal, a male Canaanite deity whose altar Gideon destroyed (Judges 6:25 - 30) and who had all its Israel-based priests killed by Elijah at Mount Carmel (1Kings 18).

Chemosh was the primary god of the Moabites whom Israel and Solomon indulged in worshipping (1Kings 11:7, 33). Dagon, the fish god, was the main deity worshipped by the Philistines (Judges 16:23). Diana was the goddess zealously worshipped in Ephesus and whose followers caused a great deal of trouble for the apostle Paul (Acts 19:24, 35).

Molech, an ancient pagan god of the Ammonites (Leviticus 18:21, 1Kings 11:7), was worshipped by both Solomon (1Kings 11:7) and Israel. The rites of this evil deity included sacrificing children (2Kings 23:10).
