There are several Biblical cities named Bethshemesh. One of them existed within Judah, with others found within the territories of Naphtali and Isaachar.

During the reign of King Ahaz (735 - 715 B.C.), Judah's Bethshemesh was captured by the Philistines when they invaded the kingdom. The Philistines then repopulate the city with their own people. The Bible also mentions a Bethshemesh located in Egypt.
