Meaning of Numbers: The Number 142

The English phrase "hundred and forty and two," used for the number 142, is not recorded in the King James Bible.

The possible meaning of the number 142 is primarily derived from the occurrences of certain words both in the original Greek of the New Testament and the King James translation.

The Greek word agapao, Strong's Concordance #G25, is recorded 142 times in 109 Greek New Testament verses. It is found the most in the gospel of John (37 times) followed by 1John (28) and Luke (13). The word is usually translated as either "love" or "beloved" in the King James New Testament.

Agapao means a caring or godly love for someone even if you do not know or like him or her. A second word also translated as "love," the Greek phileo (Strong's #G5368), is used to convey a person's brotherly affection and friendliness to another. The meaning of the two words is contrasted in Jesus' discussion with Peter after his resurrection.

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (agapao) thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love (phileo) thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs (John 21:15, KJV).

Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved (agapao) thee (Revelation 3:9, KJV).

Appearances of Number One Hundred Forty Two

The Greek word zao, Strong's #G2198, is recorded 142 times in 127 Greek New Testament verses. It is found the most in the book of Romans (22 times) followed by John (18) and Revelation (15).

The word zao means "to live" and is usually translated as "live," "living," "alive" or "lived." Its first Biblical use is in Jesus' well-known statement to Satan the devil about the importance of food in the life of a human.

It is written, Man shall not live (zao) by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4, KJV).

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God,

and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived (zao) and reigned with Christ a thousand years (Revelation 20:4, KJV).

The English word "darkness" appears in 142 King James Bible verses. Its first three occurrences appear within the first five verses of Scripture.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters . . .

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day (Genesis 1:2, 4 - 5, KJV).

The Psalms and Number 142

Psalm 142 is one of the shorter Psalms with only seven verses. Written while King David was staying in a cave, it calls upon the Lord for help during a time of persecution.

I cried to the Lord with my voice; with my voice did I make my supplication unto the Lord. I poured out my complaint before Him; I declared my trouble before Him . . .

I cried to You, O Lord; I said, "You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

"Hear my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I.

"Bring my soul out of prison that I may praise Your name; the righteous shall gather around me, for You shall deal bountifully with me" (verses 1 - 2, 5 - 7 of Psalm 142, HBFV).

The English word "times" is found 146 times in 142 King James verses. It is recorded the most in the book of Leviticus and Daniel (16 times each) followed by the Psalms (12) and the books of Numbers and Acts (7 each).

And he (Esau) said (to his father Isaac), Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? (Genesis 27:36, KJV).

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times (Daniel 9:25, KJV).

There are 4 words and phrases in the Bible's original languages that are recorded exactly 142 times.

142 is equal to 2 x 71. Both 2 and 71 are prime numbers.

The only chapters in God's word to have exactly seven verses are Psalm 11, 14, 54, 67, 87, 110, 120, 142, Isaiah 18 and Jeremiah 47.

In 142 B.C. Simon Thassi becomes High Priest. He also takes on the role of the new leader of the Maccabean-led revolt against the Seleucids and their domination over Judea.

The English name Samuel is the 15th most common personal name in the King James Bible. It is recorded 142 times in 121 King James verses. It is recorded the most in the book of 1Samuel (131 times) followed by 1Chronicles (5) and the book of Acts (2).

Samuel's name means "heard of God" or "His name is El." Samuel the prophet, and his sons, were the last in a long line of judges that guided Israel from the time of Joshua (1398 to 1050 B.C.).

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah (1Samuel 16;13, KJV).

Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days (Acts 3:24, KJV).

And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon (Gideon), and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae (Jephthah); of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions . . . (Hebrews 11:32 - 33, KJV).
